According to The Register, a former Google software engineer has been convicted of stealing proprietary artificial intelligence hardware secrets from the company. The stolen information was intended to benefit two China-based firms, one of which the engineer himself founded.Linwei Ding, 38, was found guilty on 14 counts, including economic espionage and trade secret theft, for illicitly acquiring confidential data concerning Google's Tensor Processing Units (TPUs), Graphics Processing Units (GPUs), and SmartNIC network interface cards. Ding exfiltrated over 1,000 files by copying them into an Apple Notes application on his Google-issued laptop, converting them to PDF, and uploading them to a personal Google Cloud account to evade detection. He subsequently traveled to China, co-founded Shanghai Zhisuan Technology Co. Ltd., and aimed to leverage the stolen information to develop and market AI technology, with an internal memo indicating plans to target PRC-controlled entities, including government agencies. This conviction highlights significant risks in the tech industry concerning intellectual property theft and the potential for nation-state actors to acquire advanced technology. While Google's internal security measures eventually aided investigators, they did not prevent the initial theft.Source: The Register
