Officials at Europol have confirmed that the Ragnar Locker ransomware group's infrastructure has been dismantled alongside the arrest of a primary target working as a developer for the ransomware gang as part of an international ransomware crackdown by law enforcement and judicial authorities across 11 countries, including the U.S., reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.
Numerous hacking, extortion, and money laundering charges have been filed against the developer of Ragnar Locker, which has been targeting major critical infrastructure organizations in double extortion attacks since 2020. "This investigation shows that once again international cooperation is the key to taking ransomware groups down. Prevention and security are improving. However, ransomware operators continue to innovate and find new victims... I hope this round of arrests sends a strong message to ransomware operators who think they can continue their attacks without consequence," said Europol European Cybercrime Centre Head Edvardas Sileris.
