The European Parliament voted on Thursday to call on EU member states to “drop any criminal charges against Edward Snowden, grant him protection and consequently prevent extradition or rendition by third parties,” a press release stated.
The 285-281 vote in favor of this resolution primarily urges the EU commission to “ensure that all data transfers to the U.S. are subject to an ‘effective level of protection'” and that Snowden is given protection as a “human rights defender.”
While the vote doesn't grant Snowden asylum just yet, he said in a tweet he saw it as an “open hand extended by friends” and a “chance to move forward.”
