According to The Cyber Express, the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) has issued a warning about the increasing threat of account takeover (ATO) fraud across the United States. With over 5,100 complaints related to ATO fraud filed since January 2025, totaling losses exceeding $262 million, individuals, businesses and organizations are urged to remain vigilant.Cyber criminals are leveraging ATO schemes by impersonating financial institutions to gain unauthorized access to online accounts, aiming to steal funds or sensitive information. The FBI cautions that the surge in online shopping during events like Black Friday provides a fertile ground for ATO fraud. Attackers use tactics like fake customer support calls, phishing pages and fraudulent ads disguised as payment portals to exploit the increased online activity and blend in with legitimate transactions. To mitigate risks, the FBI advises limiting public sharing of personal information, monitoring financial accounts regularly, using strong passwords and multi-factor authentication, avoiding unsolicited links, and treating unexpected communications from financial institutions with caution. In case of an ATO incident, swift action such as contacting financial institutions, resetting compromised credentials, and reporting to the IC3 is crucial to minimize losses and prevent further fraudulent activities.Source: The Cyber Express
