The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) said it will develop an “automated scorecard” that will provide an overview of vulnerabilities in military computer networks, weapons systems, and installations so that officials can better prioritize security patches.
Officials will be able to instantaneously detect and respond to cyber attacks and to help secure the military's most vulnerable systems such as those in weapons that were developed before cybersecurity was a priority, according to Reuters.
The original purpose for the scorecard was to identify weaknesses in weapons and networks but now the Pentagon is looking to use it as well to account for how data moves among military agencies.
The initiative, to be led by the Pentagon's chief information officer (CIO), emerged after a report highlighted critical vulnerabilities in U.S. weapons systems. Officials expect to reach agreement on the framework within months.
