The U.S. Cyber Command will receive nearly $417 million from the finalized National Defense Authorization Act for FY26 (NDAA) that was released Sunday, according to Nextgov/FCW.The NDAA will provide the digital combatant command with approximately $73 million for cyberspace operations, $314 million for its headquarters’ operations and maintenance and about $30 million for undisclosed activities. It also includes funding for cyberspace activities, maintenance and training across all major branches of the Defense Department (DOD), keeps the dual-hat leadership structure of the National Security Agency and Cybercom, and calls for the DOD to coordinate all of its cybersecurity regulations by June 2026.“The harmonization required … shall ensure that processes and governance structures exist and are sufficient to identify and eliminate duplicative and inconsistent cybersecurity requirements and cybersecurity requirements unique to single contracts,” the bill states. The NDAA appears to contradict the Trump administration’s national security strategy, including its support of the Western Balkans’ cybersecurity infrastructure, investigation of Russia and China’s malign influence operations and demand the defense secretary to guarantee that the mobile phones of senior officials and others involved in sensitive national security functions comply with “enhanced” cybersecurity protections. The defense bill also emphasizes the adoption of AI and cybersecurity. One relevant provision is requiring the defense secretary to “develop a framework for the implementation of cybersecurity and physical security standards and best practices relating to covered artificial intelligence and machi ne learning technologies to mitigate risks to the Department of Defense from the use of such technologies.”
