As reported by HackRead, a cybersecurity threat known as the screen-sharing scam is rapidly spreading through WhatsApp, targeting users worldwide to steal money and personal data.

The screen-sharing scam involves scammers initiating unexpected video calls, posing as trusted entities such as bank employees or Meta support agents, according to research by ESET. By creating panic and urgency, victims are coerced into sharing their screens or installing remote access apps, granting scammers access to sensitive information. This psychological manipulation technique aims to exploit trust and urgency to deceive users into divulging passwords, banking details and one-time passwords.

Meta is actively combating this scam by enhancing WhatsApp's security features with AI-powered tools, including real-time alerts for untrusted contacts during screen sharing. Despite these efforts, users are advised to remain vigilant by refraining from sharing sensitive information with strangers and verifying suspicious claims through trusted channels. Implementing additional security measures like two-step verification can further safeguard against such scams, emphasizing the importance of user awareness and proactive cybersecurity practices in the face of evolving threats.
