Cybercriminals sentenced for identity theft, fraud

Cybercriminals Alessandro Doreus, Djouman Doreus, and Jean Elie Doreus Jovin have been given multi-year sentences after entering a guilty plea to charges of conspiracy to commit fraud and aggravated identity theft as a result of a five-year-long scheme where they were able to access hundreds of individuals' credentials, account numbers, and Social Security numbers, according to The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future. Court documents revealed that information stolen by the trio had been leveraged for loans, credit card opening, and financial account creation, with the hackers using fraudulent credit cards to allow payments to fraudulent vendor accounts created and controlled by Jovin. Fraudulent tax returns have also been filed by hackers to the IRS.A six-year and nine-month sentence was given to Alessandro Doreus and Jovin, while a five-year sentence was handed to Djouman Doreus. "The Doreus trio wrongly assumed that their crimes would be untraceable, hidden under a cloak of internet anonymity," IRS-CI Special Agent in Charge Brian Payne said.
