Coupang breach toll grows further

Nearly 165,000 more accounts were discovered by leading South Korean e-commerce firm Coupang to have been impacted by the massive data breach in November, which was confirmed to have impacted 33.7 million users, reports Korea JoongAng Daily.

Coupang disclosed that information, such as names, phone numbers, and addresses, had been compromised, but not payment and login details, email addresses, order histories, and building door codes.

"These are additional findings from the same incident that occurred in November, not a new data leak. We are strengthening internal monitoring and operating systems that allow for immediate responses should similar situations arise," said Coupang, which dismissed any secondary damage while pledging $34 worth of gift vouchers for the affected accounts.

Such a development comes days after Coupang Korea Interim CEO Harold Rogers was questioned by South Korean police over purported evidence tampering related to the data security incident. Further police questioning has been scheduled on Feb. 6.
