Cloud storage subscription scam targets users worldwide

A large-scale cloud storage subscription scam campaign has been targeting users globally with deceptive emails. These messages falsely warn recipients that their photos, files, and accounts are at risk of being blocked or deleted due to alleged payment failures, according to a report by Bleeping Computer.

The campaign utilizes a wide range of randomly generated domains and subject lines designed to instill urgency, often personalizing messages with recipient names and specific dates. Emails claim payment issues or storage limits require immediate resolution to prevent data loss. Links within these emails redirect users to phishing pages impersonating legitimate cloud service portals, frequently using Google Cloud branding. These fake pages claim storage is full and offer discounted upgrades. However, clicking to upgrade redirects users to affiliate marketing pages promoting unrelated products like VPNs and security software, ultimately designed to collect credit card details and generate revenue for the scammers.

This scam highlights the persistent threat of phishing campaigns that exploit user fear of data loss. Legitimate cloud providers typically suspend services or offer grace periods rather than immediate deletion. Users should be wary of unsolicited emails demanding urgent action or offering steep discounts, and always verify billing or account issues directly through official websites or apps to avoid falling victim to such schemes.
