A new do-it-yourself botnet generating tool has leaked in the wild.
According to a blog post by Dancho Danchev, threat analyst at security firm Webroot, the bot uses the Remote Desktop Protocol to interact with malware-ridden machines.
However, after observing interactions amongst cyber criminals in online chat communities, Danchev reported that many miscreants on the forum believed the bot is buggy because it uses “copy and paste source code from other underground releases.” The botnet currently has a price tag of $10,000.
Botnets and exploit kits, like the commercially available BlackHole, are available on several black market file-sharing sites and packaged for do-it-yourself use, lowering the cost of entry for amateur cyber criminals hoping to steal sensitive data for monetary gain.
