A provider of information and security services to government agencies and commercial enterprises, including the Department of Homeland Security (DHS) and Office of Personnel Management (OPM), has been breached.
U.S. Investigations Services, LLC (USIS) announced in statement posted on Wednesday that it was the victim of a state-sponsored attack, according to experts who reviewed the case.
The DHS and OPM have suspended its contracts with USIS in the meantime.
USIS is working with federal law enforcement and have additionally brought on an independent forensics investigations firm to determine exactly what happened, according to the statement.
Peter Boogaard, a DHS spokesperson, said that a forensic analysis revealed that DHS personnel might have been affected, according to a Washington Post report, which adds that while DHS does encrypt data sent to USIS, it is unknown whether it remains encrypted.
