As reported by The Register, Australia's Security and Intelligence Organisation (ASIO) has formed specialized units to combat cyber sabotage orchestrated by nation-states targeting the country's critical infrastructure, according to ASIO Director-General Mike Burgess.Burgess revealed that ASIO discovered nation-state hackers had compromised the network of an Australian critical infrastructure provider, gaining credentials for active users, including IT professionals. These hackers were mapping the network and maintaining access for potential sabotage. This incident highlights a broader trend, with ASIO assessing that many countries in the region have been compromised by the same state's cyber apparatus. Beyond sabotage, ASIO also detailed an espionage attempt targeting information about the AUKUS defense pact, where a foreign intelligence operative attempted to solicit classified information. ASIO disrupted this operation, gaining insights into the foreign service's methods. The agency is also addressing the evolving threat of online radicalization, particularly among minors, and has resolved 14 significant terror-related cases since December 2025. ASIO is actively adopting new technologies, including artificial intelligence, to enhance its security capabilities.Source: The Register
