Apple received gov’t data requests for at least 2,000 customer accounts

Through its first transparency report, Apple revealed how often the U.S. tapped the company for customer data.

The report (PDF), released in response to the public's growing concern over government surveillance tactics, showed that data on 2,000 to 3,000 Apple accounts where requested by U.S. law enforcement agencies between Jan. 1 and June 30.

Since the government only permits companies to report such requests in increments of 1,000, limited information was shared.For example, the number of accounts where data was disclosed by Apple fell in the 0 to 1,000 range.

The report also revealed that the U.S. requested data on 8,605 Apple devices in the first half of this year.
