Anonymous takes down Fort Lauderdale city websites in “Operation Lift the Bans”

Upset with the city of Fort Lauderdale's recent ordinances that regulate the city's homeless, hacktivist collective Anonymous launched a denial-of-service attack on city websites Monday.

Sites affected by the attack included fortlauderdale.gov and the police department website, flpd.org, in addition to the city's email system, according to a report by The Sun Sentinel. Fort Lauderdale officials decided to shut down the sites as a precaution to ensure no one accessed them for “malicious purposes.”

In a video posted on YouTube, the group calls out Mayor Jack Seiler on the new regulations, which prohibit the homeless to panhandle at busy intersections or sleep on public property downtown and restricts charitable groups from feeding them.

The group urges the public not to spend any money that goes toward the city and encourages them to join their cause.
