The man accused of creating Silk Road – a black market existing on the Deep Web and accessible through the Tor network – is facing new charges from federal prosecutors.
A new indictment filed in Manhattan federal court charges 30-year-old Ross Ulbricht – also known as Dread Pirate Robert, DPR or Silk Road – with narcotics trafficking, distribution of narcotics and conspiracy to traffic in fraudulent identification documents.
These new charges are in addition to the four Ulbricht already faced: money laundering, computer hacking, running a criminal enterprise and drug conspiracy – which his attorney recently filed to be dismissed.
Ulbricht, who was arrested in October 2013, allegedly owned and operated the black market bazaar Silk Road, where criminal services and drugs could be purchased using Bitcoins. If found guilty he faces a minimum 30-year prison sentence.
