A million-plus accessed Facebook via Tor last month

Share

In the past month, more than one million people accessed Facebook using Tor, according to an announcement from the social media site.

Facebook launched an Onion address in October 2014 as a way for users to access the site through Tor "without losing the cryptographic protections provided by the Tor cloud."

The just-released figure doubles the number of Facebook users accessing the site via Tor from June 2015, when the site experienced around 525,000 people logging in over Tor.

While many perceive Tor as a technology employed by illicit operators, many depend on it for anonymity, including journalists and users in places where censorship controls are in place.

However, once on the site, a user's identity becomes evident once they start updating their status – e.g., revealing an activity or posting a location.
