A significant data breach at 700Credit, a company providing credit checks and identity verification for auto dealerships, has resulted in the theft of personal information belonging to at least 5.6 million individuals. The breach, which occurred in October, involved the exposure of names, addresses, dates of birth, and Social Security numbers. The company, based in Michigan, has begun notifying affected individuals by mail, offering credit monitoring services as a protective measure, as reported by TechCrunch.

The compromised data was collected from auto dealerships between May and October 2025. An unidentified "bad actor" is responsible for the breach, according to a statement from 700Credit. The full scope of the attack method remains unclear, but the targeted entities are individuals whose information was processed by 700Credit for verification purposes. This incident highlights vulnerabilities within the automotive retail sector's data handling practices, potentially impacting consumer trust and the security of sensitive financial information.

Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel urged those who receive notification letters from 700Credit not to disregard them. She emphasized the importance of taking immediate steps to protect personal data, such as implementing credit freezes or utilizing monitoring services to prevent potential fraud and identity theft.
