$1.1M fine issued to firm for violating Canada’s anti-spam law

The authority in charge of regulating Canada's broadcasting and telecommunications sector has issued the first fine to an organization for violating the country's anti-spam law.

A $1.1 million penalty was given to Compu-Finder by the Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) for sending promotional messages to individuals without their consent, according to a release by the CRTC.

Additionally, the messages to recipients – which touted professional development, management and social media courses – had faulty unsubscribe features included. Following an investigation by the Spam Reporting Centre, which analyzed complaints made by recipients, it found that the messages were sent to recipients between July 2, 2014 and September 16, 2014, and accounting for 26 percent of complaints received in Compu-Finder's sector.

The company has 30 days to respond to the Notice of Violation or pay the hefty fine.
