Threat actors have been exploiting Adobe Creative Cloud accounts to spread malicious images and PDF files with embedded links aimed at exfiltrating credentials belonging to Microsoft Office 365 and Gmail users, a report from Avanan revealed.
Most malware downloads have originated from the cloud, with the percentage of cloud-based malware increasing from 46% in 2020 to 66% in the fourth quarter of 2021.
The new malware, which is designed to mimic the appearance of ransomware but includes no mechanism for ransom recovery, has not been tied to any currently tracked APT group or nation, but was found in “dozens” of Ukrainian systems across the government, non-profit and information technology sectors.
