The initial setup of the appliance is done through a combination of using the web-based administration interface and registering the product using the SonicWALL online activation service. All configuration is done manually through the web GUI with no help from configuration wizards. That said, the GUI is well-organized, and most configuration tasks are simple and straightforward.
Once the appliance is set up with an initial configuration, advanced policy deployment is also quite simple. The policy and compliance section is easy to navigate and includes a few prebuilt compliance templates right out of the box. These templates can be changed or customized, or policy can be configured from the ground up with just a few clicks of the mouse.
Documentation included quick-start, administrator and getting-started guides. Both the quick-start and getting-started guides are used together to complete the steps for connecting the appliance to the network, registering the appliance with SonicWALL and getting the appliance set up with an initial configuration. All guides included a reasonable amount of screen shots and clear, step-by-step instructions.
SonicWALL provides support through an annual maintenance agreement with cost based on the number of users in the environment and options chosen.
At a price just under $7,000 before support and maintenance subscriptions, we find this tool to be a good value for the money. The SonicWALL Email Security Appliance 4300 incorporates a multitude of functionality in an easy-to-manage platform.
