NetIQ MailMarshal & WebMarshal Content Security Suite

MailMarshal and WebMarshal are not traditional anti-virus products, but rather content security offerings that, when combined, provide a management framework by which one or more third-party anti-virus products can be used to check email messages, attachments and web downloads.

MailMarshal is installed as an email gateway to provide a first line of defence as a guardian where email enters a network. Its partner product, WebMarshal, protects against web-based email and other infected http downloads by enforcing corporate web access policies based on factors including URL, file type and size, time of day, virus check, and file content. It also enables administrators to monitor current web access sessions. The product uses DLL integrated scanning to enhance speed.

Both can operate multiple third-party anti-virus scanners simultaneously, in theory covering users against update delays and weaknesses in any single product.

It also effectively acts as a plug-in to Microsoft Exchange, so all email sending and receiving functions are handled by the main Exchange server installation.

MailMarshal Server comes with a Configurator, Console, and Reports, which may be installed on different computers. The install requires Windows 2000 with Active Directory, Microsoft Exchange 2000 with SP2, Microsoft Management Console 1.2, Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2.5 and SQL Server 7.0 as the back-end data store.

However, there is no need to purchase this as a standalone as a free runtime version of SQL Server, Microsoft Data Engine (MSDE) ships on the NetIQ installation media. However, due to the limitations on database size in MSDE, SQL Server is recommended for sites over 500 users in size.

It is worth noting that, given the enterprise-class scale of both MailMarshall and WebMarshall, installation of both products was remarkably seamless, with extremely well-designed wizards.
