When a laptop is worth more than the information on it

Share

Imagine losing a corporate laptop, it costing the company one million dollars, and the personal information on it being a mere after-thought?

A UK-based luxury goods manufacturer is creating the first-ever "million-dollar laptop," complete with a souped-up, 17-inch screen, huge memory capabilities, a Blu-ray Disc drive and some interesting security features.

Luvaglio CEO Rohan Sinclair Luvaglio told Gizmag in March: “Unlike many of the highly priced products being released, we took our time to develop something out of the ordinary with real attention to detail. “

“I didn't want us to simply re-house a laptop into a diamond studded casing, or diamond encrust the entire thing simply to make it expensive," he said. "We've put thought in from the keyboard down to the power charger. There is an integrated screen cleaning device and a very rare colored diamond piece of jewelry that doubles up as the power button when placed into the laptop and also acts as security identification. We have used diamonds elsewhere but have given them purpose."

It's doubtful we'll find any of these in the corporate world - I think they're fine sticking with $1,000 Dells or ThinkPads for now - but can you imagine the aftermath of losing one of these:

Employee: I lost the laptop.
Boss: The laptop?
Employee: Yep, but don't worry, the diamond-encrusted security access feature is going to protect all the customer information on it.
Boss: Who cares about the customers? You just cost me my bonus.
