Ruby-written Metasploit 3.0 released

The newest version of the Metasploit Framework, built to be friendlier to Microsoft Windows users, has been released to the public after a rewrite in the Ruby programming language.

Metasploit 3.0 has improved on earlier versions by easing the automation of exploiting through script, simplifying exploit-writing, increasing code re-use between exploits and improving the integration of evasion techniques. The framework will "continue to provide a friendly outlet for cutting edge exploitation technology," according to a post on the Metasploit website.

The tool, which can run on all operating systems, is used by network professionals to penetration test and verify patch installations.

In a Tuesday blog post – timed with the platform’s release – the Metasploit staff said the Ruby coding language will make network testing quicker and easier.

"Thanks to Ruby’s in-process threading support, it is possible to share a single Metasploit instance with other users, exploit multiple hosts at the same time, and run persistent background services while only consuming the system resources of a single person," according to a post by the Metasploit staff.
