Purdue University notifies 111 students that their personal information was available online

What happened? A document containing the names and Social Security numbers of 111 students and former students of Purdue University was on a server connected to the web.

Details: The document contained the personal information of 111 students in the Animal Sciences 102 class held in fall 2004.

What was the response? The information was discovered though an internet search, reported to the university’s chief information security officer and removed.

Details: The class is typically taken by freshmen, meaning that affected students are still enrolled at Purdue.

Quote: “We do not know that anyone has used this information illegally, but because the possibility exists, we are trying to inform every person whose information was in the file,” said Alan Grant, professor and head of the Department of Animal Sciences.
