The White House has issued cybersecurity guidelines for Internet of Things (IoT) devices through a 257-page report developed by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST).The IoT document takes a different approach detailing the engineering actions that need to be taken to create more defensible and survivable systems that have cybersecurity baked in during the design phase.“Increasing the trustworthiness of systems is a significant undertaking that requires a substantial investment in the requirements, architecture, design, and development of systems, components, applications, and networks —and a fundamental cultural change to the current “business as usual” approach,” wrote Ron Ross, the project lead, in the report's introduction.The Morning Consult said the report, which was four years in the making, was completed a month earlier than scheduled due to the massive DDoS attack a few weeks ago that leveraged IoT devices.
