Microsoft issues critical Windows patch

Microsoft on Tuesday issued a critical patch for a security vulnerability in Windows that could allow attackers to take over a system.

The vulnerability affects Windows versions NT 4.0, NT Server 4.0 Terminal Server Edition, 2000, XP, and Server 2003.

The flaw affects the way Windows implements ASN.1 (Abstract Syntax Notation 1), a standard used to normalize and understand data across various platforms.
