The Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and Kansas City officials are searching for lost agency computer tapes that may have been missing for as long as two months.
The Kansas City Star reported last Friday that municipal officials and U.S. Treasury Department agents were investigating the missing tapes, which arrived in the city in August.
Rich Noll, Kansas City assistant city manager, told the Star that he thought an investigation into the missing tapes began in November. The tapes were part of an information-sharing effort between the federal agency and the city to help the municipality enforce collection of an earnings tax.
City officials and the IRS did not provide details on the number of taxpayers affected or what personal information was on the tapes, according to the Star.
Calls to the IRS seeking comment were not returned.
