The International Information Systems Security Certification Consortium (ISC)2 has welcomed 13 senior information security executives as charter members of its Advisory Board of the Americas for Cyber Security.

The non-profit group's volunteer advisory board, which includes information security experts from companies including Cisco, GM, Microsoft, eBay, Symantec and Deloitte, has met in Chicago to provide advice to the (ISC)2 executive management team on information security policies.

Other items on the agenda included a discussion of recommendations regarding the professional education and certification of cyber security professionals in North and South America.

"Our goal is to provide a forum for the exchange of ideas and programs to identify the education and certification requirements to help (ISC)2 meet these challenges and the needs of its constituents throughout the Americas," said James Duffy, (ISC)2 president and CEO.

Randy Sanovic, CISSP and general director, information systems security for GM, will share the leadership of the advisory board as co-chair with Bruce Murphy, global security services lead for Cisco Systems.

"By establishing the Advisory Board of the Americas, (ISC)2 has demonstrated a clear commitment to meeting the specialised knowledge and certification requirements for information security professionals in the region," said Sanovic.

"Employers should understand that just as security software is only as effective as its last update, so information security professionals are only as effective as their understanding of the current best practices in the field."
