A friend pointed out an interesting story today about a well-to-do Philadelphia college student and her 25-year-old beau who burglarized neighbors' apartments with the goal of allegedly stealing their identities.
The pair apparently had keys to all of the apartments, granting them unforced entry to the wealth of personal information sitting in these ritzy residences.
But apparently having unfettered access to the physical apartments was not enough. The devious duo - Jocelyn Kirsch, 22, is a senior at Drexel University, Edward Anderton graduated from the University of Pennsylvania in 2005 - also allegedly downloaded information-stealing spyware to victims' PCs.
This, of course, goes to show how much more valuable a compromised computer can be for a criminal than an unlocked apartment.
All told, Kirsch and Anderton stole $100,000. They face charges of identity theft, conspiracy, unlawful use of a computer and forgery.
Apparently Kirsch's classmates weren't surprised by the arrest. One woman even has a file she keeps titled "Things Jocelyn Took From Me."
