CEOs Knowingly Put Businesses at Risk via Shadow IT Activity, Study Finds

Even though business executives understand the risks to the organization as a result of shadow IT, a majority still find themselves thwarting IT departments.

In a new survey conducted by cloud-based security firm Code42, a majority of CEOs fessed up to their shadow IT activity even though they know it puts their organization at risk.

Of the 1,205 IT and business decision makers surveyed, 75% of CEOs said they used programs and applications that aren’t approved by their IT departments, but more concerning is the 91% that shared they were well aware that their actions could be considered a security risk to their organization.

Given the access business decision makers have to critical information within the business, this is alarming, especially when 51% admitted to suffering a breach in the last 18 months, according to the study.
