BlackBerry signs private acquisition deal, realigns business

Canadian mobile company BlackBerry has realigned its business to refocus on enterprise customers after losing almost a billion dollars in a single quarter.

The company, which had been courting consumers with new phones based on its BlackBerry 10 operating system, had suffered from poor sales for several quarters. It cut 4,500 staff (around 40 percent of its workforce) as sales of its latest phones tanked. It announced quarterly losses of US $965 million on revenue down 49 percent at the end of September, and said that it would refocus on its core business market.

At the Gartner IT Expo early this month, executives from the firm talked up its relevance to business customers, focusing on BlackBerry Enterprise Server, which provides secure mobile messaging and management services to enterprise clients.
