Accounting firm loses laptop stolen containing energy company’s employee data

Where did the breach take place? Chicago.

How many victims? An undisclosed number of employees and retirees of E.On energy services company based in Louisville, Ky. The U.S. offices of E.On have about 3,000 current employees.

What kind of personal information? Names, Social Security numbers and birthdates. The data was from 2005.

What happened? A laptop belonging to accounting firm Mountjoy & Bressler was stolen July 20 in Chicago.

What was the response? Both companies sent letters to victims.

Details: Police do not believe the thieves were after the information, but officials do not want to release many details over worries the thieves may realize what their have. However, both companies said the laptop contained security features that would make the data difficult to access.
