Following insights from The Register, the social media platform X removed over 13,000 accounts identified as participating in foreign influence operations targeting U.S. political discourse. The platform announced the action on Wednesday evening, linking the operations to Iran, Russia, and China.
These networks allegedly utilized inauthentic accounts to disseminate and amplify political content aimed at candidates and public figures across the political spectrum. The announcement precedes the U.S. midterm elections scheduled for Nov. 3. X stated that its goal is to maintain an authentic, open, and safe environment for discussions, particularly concerning political events. While X did not provide specific evidence for its attributions, it highlighted its Civic Integrity policy, which addresses misleading information about voting and content designed to suppress participation. The platform employs a crowdsourced feature called Community Notes, alongside its moderation efforts, to label policy-violating posts. This reliance on Community Notes comes after significant layoffs and departures from X's content moderation teams following Elon Musk's acquisition. Foreign influence campaigns are not limited to US elections, with MI5 previously stating that Russia attempted to interfere in the 2016 Brexit referendum.
