White House to create new cyber agency

Share

The Obama administration will create a new agency dedicated to fighting cyber attacks primarily by amassing intelligence from different facets of government in the face of a crisis, according to a report in the Washington Post.

The White House laid its plan for the Cyber Threat Intelligence Integration Center, which will be unveiled on Tuesday during a speech by Lisa Monaco, assistant to the president for homeland security and counterterrorism, in the wake of high-profile hacks of companies like Sony Pictures.

The Post quoted Monaco as saying the center would provide “a rapid source of intelligence” on par with the “same integrated, all-tools approach to the cyberthreat” currently trained on terrorism.

The move has drawn kudos from the likes of cyber expert Richard Clarke as well as skepticism from critics that it would create more bureaucracy.
