Web requests increasingly constituted by bot traffic, report finds

Cybercriminals using botnets to perform large-scale DDoS attacks on websites

Almost 29% of web traffic during the third quarter has been attributed to bots, indicating the rise of automated activity, even if humans still accounted for the most activity, reports SiliconANGLE.

AI crawler and fetcher traffic largely came from a few major platforms, with Meta Platforms generating roughly 60% of AI crawler traffic and OpenAI's ChatGPT responsible for 68% of AI fetcher traffic, according to Fastly's Q3 Threat Insights Report. While these bots support AI-driven services, organizations are increasingly reviewing how much automated access to allow. Fastly said only 4% of wanted bot traffic was blocked, mainly by media, high-technology, and entertainment firms.

The report also highlighted headless bots, which imitate human browsing behavior and accounted for billions of requests. The bots are used in malicious tasks such as credential abuse, scraping, and fraud, and benign processes such as testing. About 89% of this activity targeted financial services and commerce. Fastly noted that managing bot traffic is complex because similar tools are used for both attacks and internal testing.
