Washington county library breach affects over 340K

More than 340,000 individuals had their data exposed following a cyberattack against Washington's Pierce County Library System earlier this year that was claimed by the INC ransomware-as-a-service operation, reports The Record, a news site by cybersecurity firm Recorded Future.

Infiltration of the Pierce County Library System's systems between Apr. 15 and 21 exposed their patrons' names and birthdates, as well as current and former employees' Social Security numbers, driver's license numbers, financial account details, credit card information, health insurance details, passport numbers, and medical information, said the library in breach notifications published last week.

Such a development comes after INC ransomware took credit for intrusions against Crisis24's OnSolve CodeRED platform, which led to the disruption of multiple state and local governments' emergency notification systems, as well as the Pennsylvania Attorney General. Moreover, the increased prevalence of ransomware attacks against libraries worldwide has already led to a proposed program aimed at bolstering libraries' cybersecurity posture.
