Operations of several U.S. educational institutions have been impacted by separate cyberattacks disclosed during the past week, according to The Record.
Officials at Georgia's Coweta County School System, which caters to 23,000 K-12 students, have confirmed having some of the school system's network processes interrupted following a cyber incident on Friday. Investigation into the potential compromise of student and employee information is already underway. Meanwhile, Western New Mexico University has yet to recover from outages stemming from a cyberattack that commenced on Apr. 13, which resulted in the disruption of its website and other services. Alternative services are still being used by the university for its students and faculty amid continued efforts to recover the campus Wi-Fi system and official website. Both developments come as South Carolina's Charleston County School District confirmed having 20,653 students affected by a RansomHub attack in August, as well as Texas' Alvin Independent School District's acknowledgment of a Fog ransomware intrusion in July that hit over 47,000 students. Separate ransomware-related breaches were also reported by Albion College and Southern Arkansas University Tech.
