The University of Illinois Chicago confirmed a ransomware attack impacted its College of Medicine, temporarily limiting access to some systems and potentially compromising data. While affected systems have been restored and patient care was not affected, an investigation is underway to determine the extent of personal, research, or academic information stolen. The university has notified law enforcement and plans to inform individuals whose data may have been compromised. The ransomware gang Booba claimed responsibility, stating they exfiltrated 344 gigabytes of data. This group, which emerged in late July, is believed to be a rebranding of the Frag ransomware, known for encrypting files with a .booba extension and offering variants for both Linux and Windows. Booba has also targeted other entities, including Merrimack County, New Hampshire, which experienced a similar cyberattack that temporarily hindered access to critical criminal data.
