Reported by Infosecurity Magazine. The UK's Report Fraud service has launched a public awareness campaign advocating for the adoption of passkeys, following a significant rise in financial losses due to account takeover fraud.
Cybercrime involving email and social media hacking resulted in £6.3 million stolen in 2025/6, a substantial increase from £1.2 million the previous year. Reports of account takeovers rose by 34% during the same period. Common tactics include fraudsters impersonating family and friends to solicit funds or engaging in ticketing scams by selling non-existent tickets for popular events. To combat this growing threat, Report Fraud is strongly recommending the use of passkeys. These are significantly more secure than traditional passwords, as they cannot be guessed or stolen and are cryptographically tied to legitimate websites. The National Cyber Security Centre supports this recommendation, highlighting passkeys as a simpler, faster, and more secure alternative that enhances national resilience against phishing attacks.
