UK investigates X over Grok AI’s nonconsensual image generation

As reported by Bleeping Computer, the United Kingdom's data protection authority has launched a formal investigation into X and its Irish subsidiary concerning allegations that the Grok AI assistant was used to generate nonconsensual sexual images, raising significant privacy concerns.

The Information Commissioner's Office (ICO) is examining whether X Internet Unlimited Company and X.AI LLC lawfully processed personal data and implemented adequate safeguards to prevent Grok from creating harmful, manipulated images. This investigation follows reports that the AI generated sexually explicit images using individuals' personal data. The ICO emphasized the potential for immediate and significant harm, especially to children, when personal data is misused without consent.

French prosecutors also raided X's Paris offices as part of a criminal probe into similar allegations, including the generation of child sexual abuse material and Holocaust denial content. These investigations highlight the growing regulatory scrutiny of AI technologies and their potential misuse.
