UK cybersecurity workforce sees decline in female representation

British digital flag in futuristic cyber background, tech interface with glowing lights, innovation and national data concept

Based on information from The Register, the proportion of women in the UK cybersecurity industry has fallen to 16%, marking the lowest point since 2021. This decline exacerbates existing gender diversity challenges within STEM fields, particularly in cybersecurity, affecting both senior leadership and educational pipelines.

The cybersecurity sector in the UK is experiencing a significant drop in female representation, now at 16%, down from previous years and considerably lower than the 48% average across all UK industries. This issue is compounded at senior levels, where women with over six years of experience constitute only 12% of the workforce. Structural barriers, including employer exclusion and persistent stereotypes about women's interest and capabilities in cybersecurity, are cited as primary reasons for this disparity. Despite evidence of girls outperforming boys in STEM subjects, fewer women pursue cybersecurity courses, and those who do face hurdles in advancing to leadership roles. Recruitment agents report instances where employers express concerns about hiring women due to potential maternity leave, a practice that violates the UK's Equality Act 2010. While neurodivergent representation has increased to 22% and ethnic minority representation remains steady at 19%, these groups also face challenges in senior positions. Disabled individuals are also underrepresented, making up only 9% of roles in the sector.
