While the United States, Japan and India were hit hardest by online banking malware in the first quarter of this year, Malaysia also showed up among the top 10 countries plagued by the malware, according to a Trend Micro report.
The overall number of online banking malware detected by Trend Micro was approximately 116,000, an increase from 113,000 detections in the first quarter the year before, according to "TrendLabs 1Q 2014 Security Roundup" report.
Research revealed that, at 23 percent, the U.S. accounted for the largest number of online banking malware detections followed by Japan (10 percent) and India (9 percent). But Malaysia showed up on par with Australia, France, Vietnam and Mexico.
Victor Lo, South-East Asia regional consulting director at Trend Micro, attributed Malaysia's ranking in part to “the strong take-up of Internet banking,” reported The Malay Mail Online.
