U.S. CIO promotes $3.1B government-wide IT update

United States Chief Information Officer (CIO) Tony Scott Thursday promoted a $3 billion proposal to modernize government technology while speaking at the annual “Lowering The Cost of Government With IT Summit” in Washington, D.C.

Scott called for Congress to approve the creation of the Information Technology Modernization Fund (ITMF) to help modernize government technology in the form of $3.1 billion in loans to help government agencies update IT equipment. The loans would be repaid through the savings which resulted from increased efficiency.

The ITMF was introduced to the House in April and is currently being debated by Congress.

“Nobody at this point is debating if this is needed,” Scott said at the summit, according to The Hill.

Scott also emphasized the importance of shifting away from government use of older obsolete technology in exchange for more secure, cheaper, modern options.
