Trump to OK executive order preempting state AI regulations

U.S. states will be blocked from enacting their own AI laws under an executive order President Donald Trump intends to sign this week, according to TechCrunch.

Establishing a "one rule" EO on AI, which would establish an "AI Litigation Task Force" to preempt state laws and advance the development of national standards, is necessary to ensure the U.S.'s continued leadership in the AI space, said Trump, who noted that multiple regulations could stifle innovation. Implementing more lax AI laws has long been pushed by White House "AI czar" David Sacks, who will be tasked with influencing AI policy under the EO. Trump's statement follows bipartisan disapproval of efforts to hinder state AI regulation.

"The rise of AI is the most significant economic and cultural shift occurring at the moment; denying the people the ability to channel these technologies in a productive way via self-government constitutes federal government overreach and lets technology companies run wild," said Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.
