Senate bill proposes new cybersecurity resources for K-12 schools

The legislation seeks to equip educational institutions with better tools and strategies to combat the growing threat of cyberattacks, allowing them to concentrate on education rather than incident response.

The proposed Enhancing K-12 Cybersecurity Act, co-sponsored by Senators Mark Warner and Marsha Blackburn, would allocate $20 million over two years to fund several key initiatives. These include a Cybersecurity Information Exchange to share best practices and a database of cybersecurity tools, an incident registry to track cyberattacks and identify trends, and a program to directly provide schools with protective services against threats like ransomware.

The education sector is frequently targeted due to its often limited resources. Educational groups have voiced strong support, highlighting cybersecurity as a major challenge and emphasizing the need to protect student data and prevent costly disruptions.
