Scammers use AI deepfakes to impersonate OnlyFans creators

Cyber attack deepfake attack. Vulnerability text in binary system

Scammers are leveraging AI-generated deepfakes to impersonate OnlyFans creators, luring fans with promises of exclusive interactions and then disappearing after receiving payment, according to Malwarebytes. This sophisticated scheme utilizes platforms like TikTok for discovery, Snapchat for communication, and Cash App for irreversible transactions, based on information published by Security Affairs.

The fraudulent scheme involves creating fake identities using AI to generate deepfakes of real OnlyFans creators. These fake profiles are used on social media to attract followers, often promising private chats or exclusive content. The conversation is then moved to messaging apps like Snapchat, where scammers request payment via Cash App, a peer-to-peer platform where transactions are immediate and difficult to reverse. This method not only defrauds fans but also harms the legitimate creators whose identities are stolen, potentially leading to lost income and reputational damage. Some creators have reported angry fans accusing them of taking money or even showing up at their homes.

The challenge in combating this fraud is compounded by the global nature of hosting platforms and the difficulty in enforcing laws across borders. While regulations like the Take It Down Act and the EU's AI Act aim to address non-consensual content and AI-generated material, their effectiveness is limited by enforcement challenges. Spotting deepfakes can be difficult, but common artifacts include distorted features or unnatural facial movements. Experts advise verifying any requests for payment through official, verified creator accounts and treating direct payment requests for exclusive content as a significant red flag.
