Rutgers University has hired three cybersecurity firms to firm up the school's cyber defenses after a series of distributed denial-of-service (DDoS) attacks in the 2014/2015 school year.
The university hired Fishnet Security, Level 3 Communications and Imperva to analyze security, monitor servers, prevent attacks, scan for malware and provide other classified services. The school expected to spend between $2 million and $3 million this year on those firms and other undisclosed expenses. Additional security contributed to a tuition increase for the 2015/2016 school year and will likely become a permanent expense, NJ.com reported.
“We are increasing the resources dedicated to protecting and improving the security of university data and electronic environments,” a Rutgers spokesperson told SCMagazine.com in an email correspondence.
Earlier this year Rutgers asked the FBI to investigate cyberattacks that shut down internet and forced teachers to cancel classes.
