Russian state-run telco subjected to disruptive DDoS intrusion

DDoS attack

Cybernews reports that major Russian state-run telecommunications firm Rostelecom has disclosed being subjected to a large-scale distributed denial-of-service attack by still unknown perpetrators on Monday, which interrupted internet access, government services, and online banking in 30 cities across the country.

Even though the DDoS intrusion was resolved by Rostelecom later in the evening, outages across certain online services have persisted until Tuesday. Multiple users on the Russian IT social networking platform Habr reported that several platforms, including Microsoft Outlook, Telegram, Discord, Steam, CharacterAI, and League of Legends, have been rendered inaccessible by the attack. General failure issues were cited by nearly 70% of users, while 11% and fewer than 10% reported website crashes and account access concerns, respectively.

Outages were also reported to hit Russian-language internet service RuNet, Russian retailer Wildberries, Russian Railways, major Russian telecommunications operator MTS, and social media platforms VKontakte and VK Video following Rostelecom's declaration of a fix.
