Report reveals major gap in external threat visibility

A new report from Team Cymru reveals a significant gap between cybersecurity strategy and execution, with many organizations lacking comprehensive, real-time visibility into threats beyond their network perimeter, IT Brief Asia reports.

The "Voice of Cybersecurity Strategist Report" found that only 38% of security practitioners have such comprehensive external visibility, while 50% experienced a major breach in the past year. Among those breached, 72% credited their threat hunting programs with mitigating the impact. The survey identifies a "confidence versus capability" gap, noting key challenges include insufficient real-time threat intelligence (45%) and difficulty integrating external data with internal tools (42%). AI-enabled threats rank as the top emerging concern (22%), and the ability to leverage AI is the leading criterion for threat intelligence investments (52%).

CEO Joe Sander emphasized that teams need real-time external visibility to stay ahead of adaptive threats. The report also indicates a shift toward technology-led approaches and a focus on outcome-based metrics like early threat detection. Planned strategic shifts for the next 12-24 months include increasing team efficiency (45%) and aligning with regulatory compliance (40%).
